11.16.20 Update

Families of the Lake Geneva Schools,

As the 2020-2021 school year progresses toward and through the holiday season, new challenges are facing us in our attempts to keep our schools open for in-person educational opportunities. This letter serves to provide valuable information to help us achieve that goal. That is a goal that has been clearly expressed by our school community and our school boards. Our districts have been working diligently to provide the healthiest in-person learning environment possible with PPE requirements, social distancing guidelines, increased hand sanitizer stations, handwashing education, limiting non-essential visitors, increased cleaning and disinfecting frequencies, and much more.

To date, we have been successful at providing in-person educational opportunities; however, it has become more challenging as the number of positive cases of COVID-19 rise in our community. Our number of COVID-19 positive students and staff are NOT alarming (Lake Geneva Schools COVID-19 Dashboard), but the contact tracing that forces us to quarantine students and staff who are close contacts threatens our ability to continue in-person instruction. We need your help to assist in keeping our school buildings open. I ask that you carefully read the below “COVID-19 Common Scenario Guidance” for information on the scenarios that we are faced with daily in our schools.

As you read the information, please know that your cooperation is critical in our ability to continue with in-person education. We understand that you want your child in school each day; however, if they attend school when they shouldn’t, it could result in an entire class or even school having to be shut down. Also, please understand that your family’s decisions regarding social events outside of school (especially as the holidays’ approach) greatly affect keeping our schools healthy and open. Please be mindful of this as we all attempt to enjoy the holiday season.

Please have a healthy, safe, and enjoyable holiday season.

COVID-19 Common Scenario Guidance

If anyone in your household is being tested, everyone in that household MUST quarantine until the results are in. If those results for the individual being tested are negative, the household contacts may return if NOT symptomatic. If positive, we need to be notified by the family to determine a date the household member(s) may return to the building.

If a student is being sent home as a close contact, all other family members in the household (unless otherwise notified) are considered contacts of a contact and may resume their normal daily activities as long as the student deemed a close contact does NOT have symptoms. If the student develops symptoms during their close contact quarantine time, the school must be notified to determine a return date & complete contact tracing. If other siblings are in the home and unable to be separated from the positive individual, we need to determine a new return to school date.

If a student is ILL, keep them home. We are in a pandemic and this is essential to reducing the chance of transmitting COVID-19 or any other illness.

If a student presents to the health office with COVID-19 symptoms, they will be sent home for 10 days unless we are provided a NEGATIVE COVID-19 result. A negative result will allow the student to return earlier than the 10 days, as long as they are not contagious with another communicable illness. Testing is not mandatory at this time, however, if symptoms are present, it is encouraged.

If a student is symptomatic & tested POSITIVE for COVID-19, a 10 day isolation period from the day the symptoms began is mandatory. The 11th day following symptom onset is the date the individual may return to in-person learning.

If a student is NOT symptomatic (asymptomatic) and tested POSITIVE for COVID-19, a 10 day isolation period from the day the test was administered is required. The 11th day following the date the test was administered is the date the individual may return to in-person learning.

If a student is symptomatic and NEGATIVE for COVID-19, he/she may return when symptoms have improved AND is 24-hours fever-free without taking fever-reducing medications. IF another illness is diagnosed the individual may return when they are treated and no longer contagious.

If a student is deemed a close contact and tested NEGATIVE, the student must remain in quarantine for 14 days following the last known contact. The incubation period for COVID-19 is 2-14 days. Meaning, you could test negative today but develop symptoms and test positive during that 14 days period. It is suggested to get tested only if symptoms are present.

Summary:

  • If your student is ill, keep them home.

  • If anyone in the household is being tested due to exposure or symptoms, quarantine until you have results.

  • Ask the district questions if you are unsure. Error on the side of caution and if unsure, keep the student home until you have answers.

  • If the student is a close contact and tested negative, he/she still must quarantine for the 14 days following the last known exposure to the positive person.
