Tik Tok Challenge Alert

December 17, 2021

Dear Lake Geneva Joint #1 School District Families and Staff,

As you may have heard, Badger High School was dismissed early today due to a threat at Badger as part of the nationwide TikTok Challenge promoting national school violence on Friday, December 17, 2021. Even though we felt the threat at Badger was not credible, to error on the side of the safety of our students, we dismissed Badger students at 10:00 a.m. and canceled evening after-school activities at Badger.

Since the threat was specific to Badger High School, we did not dismiss any other Lake Geneva Schools (Lake Geneva Middle School, Star Center, Eastview, and Central-Denison). As you know, school safety and security are a top priority for Lake Geneva Schools. In addition to the normal safety protocols in place at all of our schools, today, additional modifications and precautions as well as a heightened police presence were put in place to ensure the safety of our students and staff.

Lake Geneva Schools always take threats seriously. We are working jointly with the Lake Geneva Police Department to continue to investigate the Badger High School threat. We would like to thank the Lake Geneva Police Department for their additional support and presence at all of our schools today.

We are always here for your student and for your family. If you need assistance of any sort, please reach out to your school principal.

Sincerely,

Dr. James Gottinger

District Administrator

Dear Badger High School Families and Staff,

Badger High School will be dismissing all students at 10:00 a.m. today, Friday, December 17, 2021.

This early dismissal comes as Badger High School was informed of a threat at Badger High School as part of the nationwide TikTok Challenge promoting national school violence on Friday, December 17, 2021. This action is being taken, even though we feel the threat is not credible, to error on the side of the safety of our students. In addition, all after-school activities will be canceled this evening at Badger. Since this threat was specific to Badger High School, all other Lake Geneva Schools will remain open today (Lake Geneva Middle School, Star Center, Eastview, and Central-Denison). As always, if parents would like to excuse their child from the remainder of the day at these schools, please contact the school office.

Buses will be picking up Badger students at 10:00 a.m.

We want to take a moment to share with families that we always take threats seriously. We are working jointly with the Lake Geneva Police Department to continue to investigate this threat.

Sincerely,

Dear Lake Geneva Schools Families and Staff,

It has been brought to our attention that there has been a TikTok Challenge promoting national school violence on Friday, December 17, 2021. While no specific threats have been made against our schools, teachers, or students, we want to be proactive in asking our families to help us prevent someone from making a serious mistake.

We want to take a moment to share with families that we always take threats seriously, be it local or national. In response to this national concern, we are working jointly with our local police departments to monitor and increase police presence throughout our schools.

Lake Geneva Schools does not tolerate any threats of violence made against any member of our school community. Any threat is taken seriously and is reported to local law enforcement.

It doesn’t matter if it is a joke. It doesn’t matter if it is a prank. Any threat of violence could result in serious disciplinary issues that could damage a student’s educational future in Lake Geneva Schools, as well as criminal charges.

Please take a few moments to talk to your children and express the severity of this issue.

We also want to ask that if our students or families see a threat on social media or elsewhere, they report it to a district staff member or law enforcement immediately. The best practice is always if you see something, say something.

We are always here for your student and for your family. If you need assistance of any sort, please reach out to your teachers, school counselor, school social worker, principal, or myself.

Thank you for partnering with us to keep all of our students, staff, and community members safe.

Sincerely,
James Gottinger
District Administrator
