Congratulations to Badger High School, the 2023 WIAA Division 2 State Football Champions.
In their first ever trip to the championship game, Badger defeated Waunakee 34 to 33 to secure their first state title at Camp Randall Stadium on Friday, November 17.
In the game, Badger set a new Division 2 state finals record with 454 rushing yards. Badger held a 471-350 advantage in total yards, with a 72-45 edge in plays run. The Badgers held the ball for 33:27 in the game compared to just 14:33 for Waunakee in a significant contrast of styles.
Badger Head Coach Matt Hensler joins father Keith as the only father-son duo to claim WIAA football titles. The elder Hensler guided Mukwonago to the 2004 championship in Division 1.
WIAA Executive Director Stephanie Hauser said the Division session was a state record for single-game tickets sold, with more than 8200.
Badger head football coach Matt Hensler has been named the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association (WFCA)/Green Bay Packers High School Coach of the Year.
